Summary:
Decentralized generation and increased reliance on renewable energy sources have led to the development of energy communities (ECs), where members jointly produce, manage, and share energy. To ensure efficient operation, ECs require advanced management systems capable of harmonizing distributed generation, storage, and consumption, thereby improving efficiency, minimizing peak demand, and increasing renewable energy integration. In this sense, this paper proposes a distributed energy management system (EMS) for residential ECs, in which each smart home autonomously minimizes its energy costs and exchanges energy locally. The approach relies on customized local optimization problems based on each home's available resources, such as photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage systems, and electric vehicles, enabling flexibility, scalability, and improved community-wide performance. The alternating direction method of multipliers is employed to solve the problem. Results show that energy sharing reduces total community costs by 4.8 % compared to the base case without energy trading, optimizes the use of local generation, and decreases reliance on the main grid, highlighting the economic and operational benefits of coordinated energy management. The analysis also underscores the importance of BESS and energy exchanges in improving the flexibility and overall efficiency of the community.
